Weiss 3Long ago, physical fitness was a natural part of everyday life, but as humanity evolved, physical fitness became less important in daily life and more necessary in dance training. According to Physical Activity and Health: A Report of the Surgeon General, “our ancestors…incorporated strenuous activity as a normal part of their daily lives – and not just for the daily subsistence demands of their “work” lives” (“ Physical Activity and Health"). Fitness was the result of daily life, rather than the result of effort. As time passed, however, people became more sedentary, less physical activity was found in everyday life. The combination of this lifestyle and increasing expectations for dancers has resulted in increased physical pressure. Ed Yong describes how “over the years, successive generations of dancers have cleverly tinkered with positions seemingly fixed and limited by the physical constraints of the dancer's body.” “In recent times, dance has become much more physically demanding” (Yong, Ed “Ballet positions have become more extreme over time”).
