Positive stereotypes such as saying that Hispanics are good at dancing or that Asians “are good at math” create a standard that most cannot reach (521). By implying a positive stereotype towards someone, they will have that characteristic or will most likely feel the need to desire and obtain that attribute. If an Asian-American person wasn't good at math, they would feel excluded from their ethnic background. Since Asians culturally believe in acting according to their traditional principles and if an Asian person is unable to meet the standards of his culture, he can be considered a nonconformist. If an individual is not accepted in their culture, this could impact the person and make them feel that they must conform to Asian standards, thus making an individual feel offended or flawed. However, a person may not make any effort to reach that standard. Sometimes, an individual rebels against the norm created by stereotypes and decides to become an independent person. Yang is a proud example of someone who has clearly stated his “negative feelings toward Asian values” (521). Yang's statement that he chooses to live with the "unyielding part" of himself rather than accept any "rewards the world has to offer" or any "attractive attitude", shows how stereotypes have influenced him to become someone who will not conform to pressure
