The Midwest was very developed with new transportation. The Spanish controlled the Texas Territory. The Americans decided to settle after the Texas Rebellion won independence. Texas was still in the debate about a slave state because English settlers brought slaves to an abolished state. The Mexican-American War once again brought slavery which produced more slaves to the Senate. A compromise was reached that made California a free state and Texas a slave state. Ulysses S. Grant had a feeling that the Mexican-American War would lead to Civil War
