At that point he states that he has more faith in individuals than in God. In Nature he says: “Standing on the bare earth, with his head bathed in the crisp air and raised in infinite space, every petty egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball; I am nothing; I see everything; the currents of Universal being circulate through me” (Emerson). Emerson is saying that he is God, and God is nature. This is the concept of the “oversoul” which states that nature, God and humanity together create happiness. People in La Salle today are heavily influenced by religion. It is what La Salle was founded on and we continue to pray before every class. He compares religion to education in Nature: “We certainly have no questions to ask that are unanswerable. We must have faith in the perfection of creation thus far, so much so that we believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things will satisfy it” (Emerson). Emerson wanted people to understand that they could find a materialistic answer to every question asked by God (the Bible). Many students, however, do not realize that religion extends beyond school and church. God can be found everywhere in nature. Students today are not intimidated by the nature around them. They don't have the same respect for the ability to be free. If Emerson were transported forward in time...
