The use of films as educational teaching tools has increased in recent years. This increase is not only visible in the school system, but also in the number of Hollywood films produced with historical content. Films are used to teach students and the general public about various historical events, and while they are important learning tools, they should not be used exclusively. The various benefits and consequences of relying on this form of education will be examined and analyzed, as well as how these aspects relate to the film Argo (2012) and things to remember when watching a major film. One of the advantages of using Hollywood films as teaching tools is that they are made for general audiences and are aimed at the masses. The benefit of this is that more people learn about certain events that they otherwise would not have been exposed to. An example of this can be seen when the 2012 blockbuster Ergo was released. For many people this was the first time they had heard about the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979. Although the film's historical context received much criticism for its historical inaccuracies, it served as a learning tool for many people who had not heard talk about events. Another advantage of Hollywood producing films with historical content is that the film provides the viewer with images, which help make the event more relatable. For example, in the film Argo (2012) the images displayed during the closing credits show still shots from the film and real images of the event. The images are nearly identical, leading viewers to believe that what they are watching is historically accurate. Since most Hollywood films are produced on big budgets, aspects of the film become so realistic that…half of paper…they watch it and remember that it is filtered to entertain and make money. Unfortunately this is not the reality we live in and the consequence of such actions is impacting some historical truths. However, not only is the accuracy of events lost due to the laziness of the general public, but also because it reshapes the memories of veterans who come to remember visual images from films rather than the actual event. The accuracy of films when telling the story of an event is often downplayed in favor of telling a story that will entertain. The use of films as pedagogical tools has many benefits, however viewers should be aware that further research is needed to gain a full understanding of the event. Films should not be the only resource for gaining knowledge about an event and should only be used when integrated with other primary sources.
