The Red Scare: Communist Witch Hunts The Red Scare is a term describing the fear of a potential communist rise that citizens of the United States felt in the 1920s and '50. During the Red Scare, many people were brought in for questioning to determine whether or not they supported the idea of communism and some of them who were brought in for questioning were unlucky. Those who were unlucky lost their jobs, friends and were even blacklisted from their previous jobs. It all started when the people of the Soviet Union overthrew their royal family in 1917 and killed them the following year. Not long after, an anarchist believed to be a communist assassinated President McKinley (The Red Scare in 1920). These events will ultimately create an uprising of fear and a sense of suspicion among the people of the United States. During the time of fear, many workers in the United States went on several strikes, and although they did not necessarily have to do with communism, in the eyes of American conservatives this was seen as the root cause of the problem. However, in 1919 a small radical group formed which believed itself to be a “Communist Labor Party” (The Red Scare). Many Americans at the time said the government had to get rid of them to keep the country safe. Although there was one person who had differing opinions with society regarding communism and that man was Mitchell Palmer. He believed that those small parties would not cause great harm to the country and said that "In the United States there would be no Bolshevik revolution." Then, he started doing "Communist Witch Hunts" where he encouraged the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate...... middle of paper... the president. A few months after revealing Senator McCarthy and his true purpose of hunting to improve his political side, the Red Scare was over. In the end, people feared in vain. The things that people were afraid of, such as the Communists infiltrating the government and taking power over the nation, never happened. People should have better judgment about a situation. Some people like McCarthy have to think of others and not themselves. They need to make people's lives easier, not harder. Works Cited "The Red Scare in 1920" History of the Modern World.
