For years Julian prayed feverishly for the three wounds, and finally received one of the three wounds. Julian became seriously ill, and Julian's community and Julian itself began to prepare for his death. In Grace M. Jantzen's book Julian of Norwich: Mystic and Theologian, it is said that Julian received the last rites of the Church, and afterward his health condition became increasingly worse. Julian of Norwich: Mystic and Theologian also delves into how Julian's experience paralleled the experiences of Jesus, regarding the passion of Christ. Just as Jesus suffered for three days, so did Julian. Throughout his suffering he prayed that “not his will be done, but yours be done,” which is also similar to Jesus. However, unlike Jesus, in what appeared to be his last hours, a priest came and he held a crucifix in his gaze, so that he could fix it before uniting with God. In those moments Julian prayed to experience the passion of Christ. Shortly thereafter, Julian began to see visions of Christ in three forms.
