Having a wide range of interests would be bad in the ideal society because people would stray from the specific job they were assigned to. “The desires of the worthless many are controlled by the desires and knowledge of the good few” When they turn away from this work they leave society weaker because not everyone has a specific function. In today's society, however, people who do not have a wide range of interests are ignorant. Knowledge comes from experiences and when people are ignorant they don't know much about the world. Plato placed a lot of emphasis on education, but to have a good education people must have a wide range of interests so they can have more experiences. This allows people to escape from the cave in which they have spent most of their lives. “The only source of knowledge is experience.” (Einstein) The only way to learn something is through experiences. Experiences are acquired over time, but the man who does not have many interests will not have as many experiences. “No matter how long you train someone to be brave, you never know whether they are brave or not until something real happens.” (Roth) Just because people are trained to be a certain way in Plato's society does not mean they will become
