Topic > Curriculum Leadership: Design, Implementation, and…

As a campus leader responsible for planning, using, and supervising curriculum and teaching, based on the assignments in this course, I would address the full range of responsibilities I would have and be able to offer teachers a multitude of strategies to ensure curricula is challenging, relevant, taught and tested. This responsible role would require understanding the various aspects of education involving administration, educators and most importantly students. Additionally, as a curriculum leader, you will need to stay informed about science-based principles and practices and how to implement them successfully. Covey (1989) stated, “Beginning with the end in mind means starting with a clear understanding of your destination” (p. 98). Traditional linear, compartmentalized instructional design lacks the capacity to develop greater and deeper student understanding. With the increasing rigor of high-stakes testing, these methods are simply not effective teaching practices. A more holistic and interrelated curriculum design model for instruction and assessment can be supported through Understanding by Design, UbD. It begins with a three-step design sequence: 1) start with the desired outcomes, 2) identify the assessment evidence, and 3) develop the learning plan (Wiggins and McTigue, 2005). To identify the desired outcomes of a particular student unit, I would work to train teachers in determining what goals should be achieved, what knowledge and skills should be acquired, and what “big ideas” students should understand. Within a particular lesson or unit of study, teachers will need to determine what evidence will support the rationale that...... half of paper ......iation for Supervision and Curriculum Development.Youtube.com.
