Across the world, women face inequality in many activities they take part in, one of which is sport. In the past, women had less chance of being recognized. However, as the years have passed, new opportunities have emerged and women are now able to take on many roles alongside men. In addition, there has always been a stereotype that women cannot be equal to men in sports. This is due to health problems or simply their physical capabilities. Women have fought for equality in all aspects of life, including the world of sports; however, society has not allowed these women to prove themselves valued because it continues to place importance on the thought that as women they cannot excel in sports. Gender is a social construct that outlines the roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a particular society believes are appropriate for men and women. These assignments made by society create gender inequalities, that is, differences between men and women that usually favor one group to some degree. Women are more likely to be the only ones disadvantaged by these gender constructs because sport is not universally perceived as an appropriate or desirable activity for girls and women. However, research on sport, gender and development has indicated that sport can benefit girls and women by: improving health and well-being, promoting self-esteem and empowerment, facilitating social inclusion and integration, challenging gender norms and providing leadership and development opportunities. result.
