Thinking about my future, I was able to identify three goals to work on to improve my life. The first goal is personal, my fiancé and I are trying to save for a house and a car and this is the year we will be shopping. My second goal is professional, in the future I would ideally like to be a social worker. However, thinking about the immediate future, I would like to find a job that gives me concrete experience in my chosen field of study. Finally, my third goal concerns my online education. My goal is to graduate on time with honors and I am willing to work hard for this. As stated by MacLeod, “To achieve a single goal, several enabling or supporting goals usually must be achieved” (2012). Therefore, you need to put a plan in place to achieve your goals successfully. When approaching your goals it is best to proceed in a SMART way, that is, ensuring that your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. -bound (Cohen, 2013). Starting from my personal goal of buying a house and a car, I developed a precise action plan. Specifically, my fiancé and I are looking at a used 2003 Volkswagen Jetta that costs three thousand dollars. We have more than half of the money set aside for the car and pay all the bills before making the purchase, so we don't have any additional expenses. Realistically, we need this car so we can travel around looking for potential homes for sale in our desired neighborhood. We can afford the car, so it's doable, but we're waiting until May to make sure our bills are paid. Getting the car before then is doable, however, staying on schedule will ensure we can afford the insurance payments and still have money in our pockets. Once we have the car we can start looking at the homes I have kept a list of and thus begin the home buying process. We've narrowed our search to Westchester, New York and it's possible to get a house for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Once we have our car, we will most likely turn to a real estate agent, who is essential when looking for a home. The house can't be further than an hour and a half from my fiancé's work and we would like to move by the end of the year.
