One of the reasons why the family has become more complex is secularization which has led people to be more accepting of homosexuality, which means that homosexual families now exist. Additionally, legislation passed regarding homosexuality, such as the Sexual Offenses Act 1967, which decriminalized homosexual sex for those over 21, has also made homosexuality more accepted throughout society. Secularization has also meant that it is easier to divorce and there is no pressure on people to marry, so single parent families are more likely to exist, single parent families are usually matrifocal. Both of these factors have led to the decline of nuclear/traditional families. Since 2001 there has been a constant increase in single-parent families with dependent children.
