The speaker of the poem is dead and is remembering the last moments of his life. This can be seen when she says, “I heard the buzz of a fly – when I died”(1), in the first line of the poem. He does this in the first line to show the reader that he cannot change the imperfections that have occurred in his life. After making it known that she has died, the speaker goes on to talk about the place of her death. He talks about the “stillness”(2) of the room and how peaceful and undisturbed it was. The speaker compares the stillness in the room to the time between thunderstorms. The period “Between the peaks of the storm” (4) is thought to be peaceful, but it is only an illusion because another storm is coming. This time between storms is a metaphor for the peace in life that can be broken in an instant
