Topic > Analysis of the non-identity problem by Robert Adams
In the hypothesis discussed here, the objection could be to compare the value of two human beings. However, in Adams' hypothesis, these humans do not yet exist. Therefore, what parents compare is not so much individuals as qualities, such as health and disability. Before an individual exists, it is permissible to evaluate the quality of different types of life relative to each other, for example healthy lives and intellectually disabled lives. Given that the individual does not yet exist, a utilitarian approach is permissible, even if this type of comparison is rejected when comparing real realities.
