At one point Ray is sitting in his car and arguing with his wife Mary about buying grass seed because they have to sell their house and to do so they have to fix the lawn he has were dried out by the drought that summer. Ray wanted to wait another year before fixing the problem and selling the house. Then Mary says, “We can't wait another year, Ray. We will be bankrupt.”(King, 2009) This shows that they are simply living their daily lives and that the extent of their concerns are about selling the house and fixing the lawn. Later in the story Ray is kneeling over his wife Mary while she lies on the floor unconscious. The store manager offers Ray a t-shirt to cover her face. Ray says “God, no! She might just be unconscious. We are not doctors.”(King, 2009) This shows that in such a short time everything can change drastically. One moment they are sitting in the car worrying about fixing the lawn to sell their house and the next moment Ray is on his knees worried sick that his wife might have just died. The second hidden meaning in this tale is about what people can miss even if it is right in front of them. Ray is sitting in the car with Mary and the story states, “He can see the dog in the rearview mirror, looking at her.” (King, 2009) The story briefly talks about how Biz always looks at Mary. This could be seen as a sign that the dog knows something is wrong with Mary but Ray doesn't get the hint. This shows that in life there are some signs that something is about to happen but they are often overlooked
