According to lesson provision 4, the nurse is responsible for individual nursing practice. After the new RN observed that the nurse was having difficulty concentrating, legally the supervising nurse was not following provision 4. The nurse was not demonstrating proper actions for which she was responsible and was not accountable for her actions. It is stated that “Recognition of responsibility for actions is the cornerstone of a profession because of the implicit social contract with the public” (Lachman, 2009, p.57). The nurse was demonstrating actions that were inappropriate and could cause potential harm. The nurse should be responsible for his or her actions. The new RN was responsible and caring for patient safety when the supervising nurse arrived at work with problems. Additionally, the supervising nurse was not following provision 3. According to the lesson, provision 3 states: “The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.” The code of ethics states that “Nurses must protect the patient, the public and the profession from potential harm when practice appears to be compromised” (ANA, 2015, p. 13). The new RN protects patients and the profession when the supervising nurse came to work
