Topic > The Importance of the Psychological Contract - 756

However, that being said, the reality of how my company executed the psychological contract also pushed me to make changes on my part. Needless to say, my motivation to perform took a serious hit. Not necessarily because I didn't get a raise, but because I gave more than what was asked for and received absolutely nothing extra in return. Well, I got some advice on how to exceed expectations. This advice didn't make me want to do more. For the first time in my life I decided that mediocrity was okay, because this company was looking for blood, sweat and tears and they didn't feel the need to fairly compensate anything less than those three elements. This concept of blood, sweat and tears is unhealthy and certainly does not promote work-life balance. Gallo (2013) states that organizations that violate the psychological contract and do not effectively communicate the valid reasons for the violation can decrease the motivation of their employees to perform tasks that would be useful in meeting organizational needs.
