In Barnett and Hughes' (2010) article that focuses on the "three important milestones" leading to college completion, the authors analyze best practices used across the country by colleges and high schools to get their students on track to success in college. They found that dual enrollment in classes, which occurs when high school students are allowed to take college courses at the same time and earn college credit upon completion, addresses the three key goals they identified. Dual enrollment also adds value to students and helps them acclimate to college. Although some states have restrictions on who can dual enroll (e.g., must have a 3.0 GPA), the focus appears to be shifting away from such restrictions to address populations who may not have been interested in postsecondary education (Barnett and Hughes, 2010). Barnett and Hughes (2010) found that the extent of dual enrollment was significant, as of 2002-2003, with over 800,000 high school students enrolled in these services. The reach doesn't stop there with the most popular offering, because there are other effective services such as summer bridging programs and middle and high schools, which are both capable of encompassing the three milestones defined by Barnett and Hughes (2010) . Their focus on K-12 schools led to statistics showing that approximately 42,000 students were enrolled in these schools in 2008-2009, and they found little to no achievement gap between minority and non-minority students ( Barnett and Hughes, 2010).
