Topic > The Fastest Growing Problem in the World: Overpopulation

OverpopulationOverpopulation is becoming one of the fastest growing problems facing our human civilization. This serious condition grows every year, every minute and every second. It is the root of most, if not all, of the world's problems. Our planet has about 5.8 billion people today, but it is expected to become about 10 billion by 2050. A very serious effect of the population explosion is its devastating effects on the global environment. Increasing amounts of food, energy and housing are required to meet the needs of human society. Much of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels. The amount of land needed just for food production will get bigger and bigger, while the amount of available land will get bigger and bigger, while the amount of available land will get smaller and smaller. An example from this recent documentary, called Food Inc., shows that cows should eat grass. Due to lack of land and demand for food, they are fed corn. Cows cannot digest corn easily, this causes the formation of e-coli. The cows are treated with antibiotics. These antibiotics are brought to our table. Food Inc. also shows that chickens have doubled in size in recent years to meet food supply demand. These chickens are injected with steroids and grow so big so fast that their legs can't even support their large bodies. Another problem related to overpopulation can also threaten people's health. We can easily see that with an overcrowded nation it is difficult to maintain a healthcare system capable of caring for all people. Furthermore, the low income of any large family is not enough to afford a nutritious diet and treat diseases when... middle of paper... Kinder, Carolyn.
