Behavioral management can be accomplished in several ways. Which of the many different theories and methods is right for you will depend on your philosophy regarding student behavior in the classroom. Different teachers will choose different methods, but all will agree on the importance of some type of behavior management plan. The best way for a teacher to develop his own management plan is to look at several and choose the one that best suits him, or use fragments of several and combine them into one cohesive plan. In this article I will introduce Lee Canter's Behavior Management Cycle behavioral management method, show how it is applied, and relate my personal thoughts on the positive and negative points of it. Lee Canter in describing the importance of a behavior management system states: “Developing a behavioral curriculum to introduce at the beginning of the school year may be the most important thing you can do to ensure student success throughout the school year. year". (Cantor, 2006, p. 37) He goes on to say, “If students don't learn how to behave in a responsible and non-disruptive manner during the day or period, you won't be able to teach them any academic subject.” (Cantor, 2006, p. 37) Every person in the field of education will agree with these statements. The behavior management cycle is a systematic approach that will help you motivate your students to quickly follow your directions, thus maximizing your teaching time. (Cantor, 2006, p. 50) The easiest way to follow Canter's behavior management cycle would be to follow it through a hypothetical situation. The hypothetical situation will be a student named Nolan, who is pulled out of the general classroom every other time. ..... middle of paper ...... class teacher. These ideas are especially useful for teachers of early elementary grades. I've discussed some of the things I personally don't like about this method and some of the things I like. As stated in the introduction, the best way for a teacher to develop a discipline or behavior plan is to examine several and choose one in its entirety or take part in one. Lee Canter offers some unique ideas on behavior management and it is always helpful for a teacher to have different points of view. Works Cited Cantor, L. (2006).
