Louis Pasteur was born in the city of Dole, France, to a family of tanners. He was born on December 27, 1822, at a time when germs and microbes had not yet been discovered. The profession of a tanner is that of a person who causes leather to become soft and durable. This profession came to him from his great-grandfather who owned a tannery business since 1763 (Notable Biographies, 2008). As children, Jean-Joseph and Jeanne Roqui Pasteur taught them loyalty, respect, financial security and hard work. In the year 1831, Pasteur went to the Ecole Primaire and College d'Arboix (Pasteur Brewing, 2008) where he is believed to have witnessed the treatment of rabies on the victims who killed 16 people that day. Pasteur subsequently decided to go to Paris to enter the Barbet Institute in 1838 but decided to return home after some difficulties due to nostalgia (Notable Biographies, 2008). Two years later, he attended the College Royal de Besançon and earned a bachelor of arts degree. Two years later, he obtained a degree in science, returned to Paris and qualified for the entrance exam to the Ecole Normale. In 1844 Pasteur entered the Ecole Normale, before managing to listen to some lectures by Jean Baptiste Dumas at the Sorbonne. In 1845, Pasteur received his master's degree in science, and in 1848 he began working in a laboratory where he began working with crystallography and developed two theses. In the year 1847, Pasteur defended his theses in chemistry and physics. This earned him his doctorate. In 1849 Pasteur married and fathered his daughter, Jeanne. In 1852, Pasteur began researching and studying the fermentation process as “president of the chemistry department of the University of Strasbourg, France” (Remarkable… at the center of the article…, but to the saviors of humanity” (Notable Biographies, 2008).
