Part A: Investigation plan This investigation aims to compare and contrast the role of women during the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. The investigation is significant because to understand the culture and ethics of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages it is essential to understand the importance of women. Issues that will be addressed include: the role of women in the Roman Empire, the role of women in the Middle Ages, and the similarities and differences of the two main periods. This investigation will focus on the time period between 27 BC and 1485 BC and the locations investigated will include Europe, more specifically Rome. This will be achieved through a detailed examination of the role of women in the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. Secondary and primary sources will be used in this investigation. Word Count: 142Part B: Evidence SummaryWomen in Rome from 753 BC to 476 were treated with respect but struggled to maintain their identity. Roman women were under the control of their father or husband once they obtained one. It was the woman's choice to remain under her father's control, which often made divorces easier, or the change to come under her husband's control. Little girls were always subject to their father's fate as to whether or not they survived. If the family couldn't afford another child, they might decide not to keep it, which was much more likely if it was a girl. While they may not have survived, if the child did, she would end up attending a school called ludus which is equivalent to a private primary school. Only wealthy parents sent them to school.
