Some 66% also said they took their academic work 'much more seriously' after the gap year.” In my first paragraph I mentioned my brother Sam who went straight to college after high school majoring in hotel and restaurant management. He later realized that hotel and restaurant management was something he didn't want to pursue. He returned three years later to take a break from college and make money so he wouldn't have to go into debt once he got out of college. If Sam had taken a gap year, he would have had the opportunity to explore other majors and save money. The idea of consistency in education is valid. However, taking a break helps prevent students from engaging in things they are not prepared for and prevents regrets they may have in the future. Another reason why students should take a gap year is because “Gap students in the Haigler survey generally returned to college within six months of their gap year, with a (re)kindled passion for learning and the ability to connect 'formal education with real experience'. “world experiences,” (Karl Haigler and Rae Nelson, authors of The Gap Year Advantage). Going straight from high school presents two challenges for students. For the first time, they will have to do it
