The interpretation of the term “human” depends on the individual's expectations of what a human being should be. The evolution of the current species of Homo sapiens began with other species that might not be considered human due to the level of intelligence they possessed. I believe that to be considered human, species must have a way of communicating with each other in a spoken language that includes correct grammar and be able to contribute to the advancement of their society by being inventive with technology and culture. Because of my interpretation of the term “human,” I believe the first hominid species to be considered “human” is Homo neadertalensis. I will compare and contrast the physical and behavioral traits that distinguish the current species of Homo sapiens and Homo neadertalensis with our closest primate relatives, the chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are our closest primate relatives due to the closeness of genetic material.
