La Grande Bellezza is a 2013 Italian film directed by Paolo Surrentino. The film won Best Foreign Language Film at the Gold Globes, the 86th Academy Awards and the BAFTA. It is the story of writer Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo) as he explores Rome, reflecting on his life and revealing his transformation. This essay will examine and analyze a crucial sequence within the Great Beauty. Before the crucial sequence, Jep and his friend Romano (Carlo Verdene) are in Romano's student apartment. Here, Romano and Jep have a conversation about Romano's new play, their past lovers, and how Jep might write again next despite writing his last novel 20 years ago. Jep's final statement in this scene is “Something always happens in Rome. Nothing happened", replying to Romano asking what happened, he also decides to write again. At this point, the director interrupts the dialogue for a moment to show Romano staring into the distance. He calls Jep to show what he sees and the camera turns allowing the audience to see a couple kissing passionately. Romano explains that the couple met at a university 10 days ago and have not stopped kissing since then. The camera returns to the couple and a poster behind them lights up white allowing the transition to the next scene. We then hear the voice of Stefania (Galatea Ranzi) who says "this generation of young people horrifies me". The next scene takes place on Jep's terrace overlooking the Colosseum. Here, Jep and his friends listen to Stefania explain Italy's problems and why she is above them. One possible reason why the filmmakers decided to switch between the couple and Stefania's is to add a bit of tragicomedy to the film. The couple has......middle of paper......lifestyle. Their lives are unchanged like much of Italy and the characters cannot live up to the great beauty that surrounds them, such as the ancient statues, the baroque palace, even the view of the Colosseum from Jep's terrace. With this the filmmakers imply that, to escape the trap of luxury, Jep must find the transcendental grandeur of life; the great beauty. The Great Beauty was an amazing film with beautiful images that made me want to buy a ticket to Italy. The film had so many compelling scenes that it was difficult to choose one to analyze. There were so many layers to this film that emphasized the eternal city itself and its inhabitants. The film plays with the idea that the eternal city is eternal because there is no change and the only way to break the pattern is to become like a tourist, travel and see the great beauty around you..
