Education is a fundamental human right that enables individual development. The right to education is affirmed internationally in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights created by the United Nations. For many privileged countries, the education problem is non-existent and all children can attend school and learn safely. That said, in many poor countries children still struggle to attend school and are forcibly denied their rights. This struggle to receive education has manifested itself through violent conflict, poverty, and unjust governments that deny children their human right to knowledge. In many poor countries, students are driven out of schools by violence and fear. In Sudan, during the second civil war, numerous schools were destroyed. In other cases the degree of fear is much greater. Many schools and students have become direct targets, as in Afghanistan, where “the Taliban deliberately bombed an elementary school because girls were allowed to attend” (The right to Education and its Denial in Conflect Situations). As a result, many students, especially girls, avoid school and fall behind. Even worse, schools can be used as military recruiting sites, creating even more unsafe conditions. “In Sri Lanka, in addition to using schools as a recruiting base, the Tamil Tigers also recruited students going to and from school as child soldiers” (The right to education and its denial in conflict situations). Students may want to learn and acquire an education, but are unable to overcome violence and conflict. School should be a happy and safe environment that allows students to grow and learn.
