Basic Technology of Internal Combustion EnginesThe basic principle underlying any internal combustion engine since their inception has been the same: if a small amount of high-energy fuel (such as gasoline or diesel ) is placed in a small, enclosed space at high pressure and turned on, the energy is released as an expanding gas. Therefore, the ICE converts the chemical energy stored in the fuel into mechanical energy that propels, in this case, the vehicle forward. Exhibit 1 illustrates the ICE.Exhibit 1Almost all vehicles using the ICE use a four-stroke combustion cycle that works as follows:1. The intake valve opens to allow a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinder.2. The piston moves back to compress the air/fuel mixture.3. The spark plug emits a spark to ignite the fuel which causes a mini explosion that causes the piston to move down.4. Once the piston reaches the bottom of its stroke, the exhaust valve opens and the exhaust leaves the cylinder towards the tailpipe. The fundamental difference between ICE and external combustion engine (ECE) is that while in ICE the combustion of the fuel takes place inside the ...
