An anonymous writer once wrote, "It is bad manners to say I love you with a mouth full of lies," yet many people do so. The denotation of love reads as an intense feeling of deep affection; However, people mistakenly believe that love meets certain criteria, including giving gifts and calling your significant other by terms of endearment. Building on this idea, William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, is the story of two young teenagers from rival families who both have wrong ideas about love. Until they meet, one believes he is madly "in love" with someone else, while the other prepares for an arranged marriage organized by her family. After risking their lives to meet, chaos ensues and five days later several people end up injured or dead. Romeo and Juliet shows that people shouldn't have these misconceptions about love. When it comes to love, society has false ideas about the nature of love and its effects on people. The characters, Romeo and Juliet, believe in these irrational ideas such as the belief that people can love each other at first sight; however this is lust. From the beginning of the play, the chorus states that Romeo and Juliet are "star-crossed lovers" (Prologue 6-8). The term literally means two people whose love is thwarted by fate, however some people assume that these two people are in love unconditionally adapting to society's ideas about that emotion. Because they are not based in truth, these assumptions are wrong, especially because they are based on irrelevant and non-factual things. For example, in the first scene of Act I, Romeo's depression about love shines through when he says, "She will not stand the siege of loving terms, / Nor wait the meeting of aggressive eyes, /... in the midst of paper……or dead and Juliet, dead before, / Hot and new killed.” (V.iii.202-204) When analyzing why these people actually died, it becomes evident that Romeo's death was caused by his belief that he should do everything in his power to be with the person he loves, even if this meant joining Juliet in the afterlife. Since it was shown that he does not love her, his death was caused by his misunderstanding about love which could have easily been avoided. As these actions demonstrate, people should not be led into mistake in believing that society's ideas about love are true. This play by Shakespeare shows that people who have wrong ideas about love, often based on society's ideas, end up depressed or damaged in some way indicates that people should evaluate what it means to be in love instead of being misled by what others think it should be.
