Topic > Special Interest Groups Rally Behind QUILTBAG - 2798

Politics determines how a government or state system is run and whether its parts function at maximum capacity. Fundamentally, the structure and unspoken hierarchy of politics and religion in the education system dictates how educational institutions respond to a range of issues including bullying, harassment and assault. The goal of policy and to extend public policy and special interest groups interested in anti-bullying and QUILTBAG (Queer, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual, Agender, Gay) education is to identify the minority, define their specific needs and create a structure that allows for a safe and inclusive learning environment. Political special interest groups allow educators to focus on the task of teaching young people, while offering resources to those who may be victims of bigotry or violence because of gender identity or expression. The definition of a safe space was adopted in a program well past its pilot phase, implemented in schools across the country, known as the Safe Schools initiative. It was created by one of the highest profile special interest groups: GLSEN (Gay and Lesbian Straight Education Network). GLSEN includes policy and structural tools in its training materials, such as: “Concrete strategies for supporting LGBT students, educating about anti-LGBT bias, and advocating for changes in your school.” (“GLSEN”) this training is critical to understanding how politics and campaigns targeting special interests can change or charge social issues even at the community level to broaden acceptance of GLBT youth, as “advocacy groups often attempt to educate the general public as well as policy makers on the nature of the problems, what legislation is needed to address the problems,......middle of the document......LSEN Safe Space Kit."
