(AC 1, 2) Stress is part of human life. It is a response of the body and mind to daily challenges, as a new situation or task might be stressful. Stress has a major impact on our decisions and behavior. Sometimes it will encourage us to do things we thought we weren't capable of and help us focus on a certain task. However, stress can cause problems, such as low self-esteem. While a small dose of stress can be helpful, when it increases and remains at a higher level, it can lead to many health problems and mental problems. Therefore it is useful to know how to deal with situations that are stressful for us or where to ask for help. The nature of stress begins in the brain. But before the brain transmits information to the rest of the body, internal or external stimulation must occur, such as any negative aspects such as loud noises or illness. Then, the brain will decide how to deal with the problem, or it will show an inability to cope, what can be seen as a stress response. The perception of stressors will influence the pituitary gland to release the hormone into the bloodstream. This hormone is called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and moves to the adrenal gland (located above the kidney). The hormone activates the adrenal cortex which releases another hormone called corticosteroids. The role of this hormone is to release energy (from the liver) and stimulate the response of the immune system. At the same time that ACTH is released, the hypothalamus activates the automatic nervous system which then sends information to the adrenal medulla (inner part of the adrenal gland). This releases adrenaline and noradrenaline which activate a reaction called by Cannon (1914) "fight or flight". Comparing all the above methods, only cognitive and social therapy treats the causes of stress, while the other methods only treat the symptoms. Cognitive therapies are effective because a person can cope with a stressful situation and can increase their sense of control. The results are also long-term, while the physiological method can only reduce stress for a short time and there are many side effects that follow, such as addiction and other health problems (especially liver problem). Cognitive therapy has no side effects, however it takes longer than anxiolytic drugs.
