Illegal immigration is a "hot" topic in our country. There is dispute between the state and federal governments over who has the authority, and our elected officials in Washington are addressing the issue, with little success. Most of us have some opinion on the topic, and our opinions tend to be based on how the issue will impact us. We wonder if illegal immigration is good for us. What are the costs for us? Is it in our country's interest? As nearly twelve million people secretly crossed the border to invade our space, our concerns grew. While our concerns are important, we should not limit ourselves to a one-sided view. Only by understanding both sides of the issue will we be inspired to work towards a fair solution. The following three issues regarding illegal immigrants have received attention. One issue concerns the belief that illegal immigrants take our jobs and don't pay taxes. A second issue is the belief that they constitute a threat to the security of our country. A third issue concerns the injustice of allowing illegal immigrants to remain in the country without legalizing their status. First, let's consider the concern that illegal immigrants will take over our jobs and not pay our taxes. It's fair to say that, for the most part, illegal immigrants do jobs that our fellow Americans would rather not have. If our workers are willing to accept work, they will not be willing to work for the wages that employers are willing to pay. In our society, people are used to unions raising the wage rate or the government subsidizing our lifestyle.
