ESSAYS TO PROMOTE RACIAL UNITY AMONG STUDENTS1.0 IntroductionOur people have lived together for generations in peace and harmony, sharing the resources with which Nature has richly endowed our land. However, our nation-building efforts were undermined by the activities of destructive elements regarding racial prejudice during the race riot of 13 May 1969. This incident has become one of the most tragic race riots in the history of our country, between the Malays and Chinese . According to a May 23, 1969 Time magazine article, “Malaysia's proud experiment in building a multiracial society exploded on the streets of Kuala Lumpur last week. This is said over and over again until Malaysians are living in a nightmare thinking that racial segregation will develop a sense of hatred between different races in Malaysia. Now, look at the picture, as we can see, we can predict how bad the riot ruined the races at that time. The corpses were scattered throughout the territory. The accident kills a large number of people in Malaysia. There are several reasons highlighted that triggered the racial riots of May 13th. First, the “divide and rule policy” inherited from the British had transformed this ethnically diverse nation into a very ethnically divided country, and existentialist policies had failed to bring about a national identity. The situation seemed to make Malays remain Malays, Chinese remain Chinese, Indians remain Indians. Malays may be proficient in speaking the Malay language, but most Chinese and Indians do not speak the national language fluently. They lead their lifestyle without disturbing other races. Firstly, we can do the “Independence Day Celebration”. From this activity, every school in Malaysia is required to celebrate it at the same time and place. Here, they have to elect different races of students to represent their school during the celebration held. The celebration can take place in the recommended location that will be announced by our Ministry of Education. .
