As globalization increases, so does the diverse student population in schools across the United States, including students who are learning English as a new language. These students are English language learners (ELLs); they are learning English for the first time in addition to their native language. They had little or no knowledge of English before entering the school environment. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (2013), approximately 4.7 million, or 10% of the public school population, are ELL students (NCES 2013). When they first formally enter the classroom, and depending on their prior experience with English, there are many ELL students who have difficulty fitting into the American context of their classroom due to cultural conflicts and language barriers (Hakuta, 1986) . Due to the language barrier and cultural conflict, the process of learning English for ELLs is challenging, which negatively affects literacy learning. Furthermore, it becomes difficult for ELL to perform well academically in school. A study conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 2011 shows that there is a significant gap in the reading achievement of ELLs and non-ELLs, with the scores of non-ELLs being much higher than ELLs (NAEP 2011) . Many ways have been discussed to help improve the literacy skills of ELLs in order to increase their reading scores, one way is by using multicultural literature. Multicultural literature can be used to create a motivating environment for ELL students to help them feel included in the classroom context, thus improving and increasing their literacy skills.
