The Great Depression was the longest known economic crisis in history. It all started in October 1929, the day the stock market crashed, leaving people across the nation in a panic. President Hoover's attempt at that time to make things work was not enough. The 1932 election came with Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the election in hopes that it would help the nation and end the Great Depression. During the 1930s and 1940s, Roosevelt's need for change led to his "New Deal" to change the roles of government to end the Great Depression so it would never happen again. October 24, 1929 was the day that would change history forever. A sudden drop in stock prices on the New York Stock Exchange has left people in a panic. While everyone was worried, a large number of people started relying on banks and withdrawing money as soon as the stock market crashed. This bankrupted banks across the nation. This day is known as Black Thursday. On October 29, the stock market lost over $5 billion in stock value, leaving companies and people completely devastated on how to deal with this crash. With the banks going bankrupt there were people left living on the streets, people losing their jobs, businesses going bankrupt, and everyone not being able to meet their financial needs. This left Hoover to help and recoup the losses from this huge and dramatic change. During the Great Depression, millions of people and civilians were out of work throughout the United States and it had a great effect on the people. When there was at least one vacancy, everyone would flee to that area and apply for the same job all at once. Unfortunately, not all people who applied were able to get the job. Most people live in… middle of paper… the Industrial Recovery Act reduced production and made wages very high. This now made it more expensive for employers to hire people. The New Deal itself faced one political setback after another guaranteeing people jobs through the outcome of the acts that took place through the program. The end of the New Deal never ended the Great Depression. He just helped people get jobs so that people could recover and get the nation back on track. Today it has benefited us by giving us better opportunities that we would not have had without the passage of the New Deal. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and we entered World War II. The war effort encouraged American industry and ended the Great Depression (New Deal). The Great Depression will always be known as a horrible tragedy, but without it we would not have the support that still exists today.
