The bonds of American society are no longer as strong as they once were. The decay of good morals and values is evident all around us, from the actions of our children to adults. Our Founding Fathers put in place the standards that led America to become the most successful nation that has ever existed. Many Americans today don't take the time to realize that our nation is falling apart. There's always a debate about what's causing it, but what most people can agree on is that there's something deeply wrong with America. Our government, which was founded to serve the people, has turned to those who think outside the box. The statement released during the IRS Committee on Oversight and Government Reform still rings loud and clear nearly a year later. “I am a freeborn American woman – wife, mother and citizen – and I am telling MY government that you have forgotten your place” (Becky Gerritson). There is already enough blame from politicians and parents who don't make time in their lives to properly raise their children, but in reality they are only part of the problem. When we examine patterns of behavior over a long period of time, certain trends begin to emerge and we find that America has become a very cruel place. America today is very different from the America of generations past. What follows are two incidents that demonstrate that society is falling apart around us. Weldon Gilbert, of Washington state, "lured teenage boys with exotic trips, plane trips and boat trips, then allegedly lured them to his home where he filmed himself sexually abusing them." "(Willmore). Gilbert defends himself against state child pornography charges, which is not a crime because he was acting as his own attorney... middle of paper... they have the right to defend themselves from their accusers.
