HISTORY OF MATCH FIXING IN INDIAThe beginning of the new millennium has not augured well for the world of cricket as it has been engulfed by a series of match fixing scandals which have left the world shocked and baffled. The first trace of cheating in cricket was found in 1994-95, Shane Warne and Mark Waugh - two of the biggest names in Australian cricket history were guilty of leaking information on team selection, weather and on the field at an Indian bookmaker in 1994. They were released easily due to lack of evidence against them. In 2000, the Delhi Police intercepted a call between a bookie and the South African captain, Hansie Cronje, which was considered the beginning of a storm that engulfed the very soul of. international cricket Three other South African players, Pieter Strydom, Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje, also came under the radar for match-fixing. Cronje admitted accepting a sum of $10,000 - $15,000 from a bookmaker for providing "prediction" information and results, and "non-match fixing" in a one-day series in India. After the confession, he was sacked as captain of the South Africa team and banned from playing cricket for life. Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams got away with a meager 6 month ban. In 2002, Hansie's flight crashed into the mountains and he and the two pilots were killed instantly. There are myriad speculations surrounding his death, some suggesting he was murdered, others saying he met his fate. The corrupt life of South Africa's greatest hero remains a mystery to all. Ironically, only Cronje's name features in the charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police in the 2000 match-fixing case. The sport never fully recovered from Cronjegate when two other international captains - ...... middle of paper ... ...making cricket a global sport, is the reason put forward by the BCCI for visiting these places, which seems too good to be true. Furthermore, the extremely busy schedule of domestic players deployed by the BCCI, led to a decline in domestic cricket standards, due to which players representing India at the international level were unsure of their position in the team lineup. However, once their national team positions are secured, they tend to become complacent and therefore more vulnerable to falling prey to match-fixing. The report highlighted major lapses in the BCCI, but there are gray spots in the CBI report too. It is likely that the CBI has revealed the extent of the cricket scam fuss only to some extent, and since it has relied heavily on the confessions of the culprits, how can we blindly believe what the tainted cricketer or the bookies they said during the interrogation?.
