History of Indian Institutes of Technology The Indian Institutes of Technology refers to the seven IITs: IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee. The IITs are institutions of national importance, established by law of Parliament. These institutes were established after independence by the Government of India to provide internationally recognized engineering and technology education of excellence. Background of IITs The existence of the Indian Institutes of Technology is due to the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who proposed to establish these institutions to provide world-class trained technical personnel for the nation who would act as leaders in technology for the newly independent India. Nehru, being an enthusiast and patron of science, was clear that science and technology had a major role to play in modernizing India and meeting the needs of its growing population. He envisioned that the IIT system would over time "provide world-class scientists and technologists who would engage in research, design, and development to help build the nation toward self-sufficiency in its technological needs." he had hoped to create a highly educated technological force that would provide vital inputs for the huge dams, power plants, and industrial ventures he wanted to build. It would help ensure that the country was self-sufficient in science and technology. Today, IITs have a reputation for being among the best engineering institutions in the world. IIT has become a globally recognized brand and the institutes are recognized globally as one of the centers of academic excellence and are renowned for: • the exceptional caliber of students graduating from them • the dynamic and relevant academic programs • contribution to national development projects through its research activities
