Scientists are those who study science using the scientific method. These “men of science,” whom Orwell describes as “a biologist, and an astronomer, perhaps a psychologist or a mathematician,” “work by induction and deduction, and who by the aid of these operations, in a sort of sense, they extort from Nature certain other things, which are called natural laws, and causes, and from these, by their cunning skill, they construct hypotheses and theories” (Huxley). What does this mean though? The things we see or do on a daily basis, some of which are done unconsciously, such as breathing, are science. We know the science behind all this, along with countless other things, such as how cars work. Many other objects, such as the salt we use to remove snow, telephones and computers, were made thanks to science. In most cases these are discoveries that we take for granted. Humanity would not be as advanced as it currently is without most, if not all, discoveries made through science. However, the more knowledge we gain, the more powerful inventions and ideas become that could cause more harm than good. I believe that the most useful creation of science is medicine. It is applied all over the world in various different forms to cure and prevent abnormalities, illnesses and diseases.
