Topic > Buddhism in Australia Buddhism as a way of life

Religions are not monolithic institutions, but living communities of believers. The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that “a precise definition of the concept of religion, or what generally constitutes 'a religion', is difficult, if not impossible, due to the intangible and wide-ranging nature of the topic. In general, a religion is regarded as a set of beliefs and practices, usually involving the recognition of a divine or superior being or power, by which people regulate the conduct of their lives both practically and morally. Buddhism is exactly this as a way of life. During the mid-19th century, during the gold rush, the Buddhist religion arrived with the Chinese miners. Workers arrive to work in the goldfields of South Australia. Most of the men returned to China once the gold rush ended, some men remained in Australia and continued to practice Buddhism. To promote Buddhism in Queensland, the Chung Tian Temple which means "Middle Paradise", was erected in 1992 and is located on the outskirts of the city of Logan. The temple provides a harmonious environment for the multicultural community to celebrate their diversity and multi-faith through Buddhism. Since the 1970s, non-Christian religions have had increasing popularity, particularly through Buddhism. Between 2006 and 2011, there was an increase of over 100,000 people applying as Buddhists. So, what is it about Buddhism that makes it so attractive? Why do so many people claim to be Buddhist? Volunteer at Chung Tian Temple Brian Kemp explains how Buddhists believe that each of us is not a group of individuals, but instead is pieces of a whole. Every person has a Buddha nature within himself and can become a Buddha. This links… the central part of the document… in some cases revolves around Pantheism. Pantheism explains human nature by saying that everyone is a part of God. Some people would say to this observation that "No, I couldn't be a part of God because I have done bad things in my life", when in reality it is the result of forgetting that you are a part of God. Just like the Buddhist view, Pantheism is based on the fact that if you do good or bad you will pay for it or be rewarded in the next life when you are reincarnated. Simone Champion is a devout Buddhist. Once, when I lived with Simone, I saw a stick insect floating near the edge of the pool. I went to pick it up when she came in, carefully took the insect in her hands and placed it gently on the grass. “This is because they did harm in their previous lives and had to come back as an insect.” It is not my place to ruin their karma prematurely”..
