IntroductionThe People's Republic of Bangladesh, commonly known as Bangladesh, is a South Asian country located between India and Myanmar. A parliamentary republic that elects its own parliament, known as the Jatiyo Sangshad, Bangladesh has a population of more than 160 million, enough to make it the eighth most populous nation in the world. Due to its relatively small size, just under 57,000 square miles, the country is also effectively one of the most densely populated nations, which has played a central role in the country's modern economic and industrial development. Bangladesh is located in what is known as the Ganges Delta, one of the most fertile regions in the entire world, which is evident through the numerous ancient civilizations existing in the area. The three main rivers located within the nation are the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Mengha, and they contribute strongly to the fertility of the region, but also make it highly susceptible to flooding during heavy rainy seasons and to severe drought during periods of drought . Being a low-lying country, Bangladesh has only a few peaks and plateaus scattered across various parts of the landscape. Overall, the country is known to be highly vulnerable to various climate-related disasters, resulting from its tropical monsoon climate and its location so low to sea level. Being a unitary state, Bangladesh therefore consolidates all its governmental power within the government centre. Parliament is elected every five years and meets in a single unicameral chamber.
