Is hydrologic fracturing an acceptable type of energy production? For the past eighty-five years, the Yank Fossil Fuel Institute, API, has developed and developed standards and engineering practices for the industry. The last decade has brought about a substitution process involving hydraulic fracturing to deliver oil and gas to places where standard technologies are ineffective. So what is hydraulic fracturing? Hydraulic fracturing is the forced opening of cracks in underground rocks by introducing liquid into the air mass, especially to extract oil or gas. The method is used in 9 out of 10 gas wells in the United States, wherever numerous gallons of water, sand and chemicals are injected by mass of air into a well or excavation. This creates small fractures within the deep rock formations over which gas, fossil fuels and brine could migrate into the wellbore. Hydraulic pressure is then removed from the wellbore, so small grains of sand or corundum keep the fractures open once the rock reaches equilibrium. Hydraulic fracturing may be due to gas extraction, but this can have a variety of potential impacts on the environment. Despite the expansion and mainstream use of hydraulic fracking, fracking still poses several health and environmental considerations. During fracking, controlled liquids are injected into trained wells, which cause the surrounding rock to crack, allowing gas and oil to flow through the cracks. Countless liters of water are used and an equally massive volume of wastewater is generated. Most water is rarely remediated, and even storing wastewater and fracturing fluid will have a negative effect on surrounding animals and vegetation.
