Topic > The Rise of China - 841

The last Chinese dynasty ended a hundred years ago, and the last great dynasty ended a thousand years ago. (Dharmananda) Nonetheless, in modern times China is rising from the ashes. China became a communist nation in nineteen forty-nine. (Woods, 2009) With the help of the USSR, China built numerous nuclear weapons in the 1950s. This kicked off China's military modernization and its re-emergence into the international community. China's international policy is to promote world peace. They hope to do this by remaining neutral and only defending their own interests, without instigating. The only contradiction in China's policy is that it interferes with Tibet and Taiwan. If Taiwan ever attempted to declare independence, China would declare war on it and, as it happens, the United States is an ally of Taiwan. Today's global superpower is the United States of America. (Vale, 2010) The United States has the most powerful military in the world, with the most funding of any country by billions of dollars. The United States is also China's number one trading partner, so if China were to antagonize the United States, China's economy would collapse. The rise of China is not a threat to global security. Pre-Communist China was a nation in turmoil. In the 1940s the country was in civil war, between nationalists and communists. The Chinese economy was in chaos. The weapons used by the communists mainly came from the USSR, while those used by the nationalists came from the United States (Global Security, 2005). When the communists won the war, the USSR continued to support the Chinese communist regime. In the 1950s China began its nuclear weapons program, building multiple nuclear bombs... middle of paper... fearing it would lose its number one trading partner by nearly $70 billion. (Prasad & Gu, 2009) The loss of the United States would devastate the Chinese economy. China is not ready to stand up to the United States at this time. The rise of China is not a threat to global security. They promote peace and international development. Their international policy is not a threat to global security. The only question they have is whether Taiwan will ever declare independence. If China declared war on Taiwan, the United States would declare war on China. Global security relies on the United States for its military strength. If China were to oppose the United States, it would lose. Since China depends on the United States for trade, they would not go to war against them. Global security is not threatened by China's rise because China and the United States depend on each other.
