3. Chapter AnalysisIn the Duffless chapter, we notice that Homer Simpson has an obsession with beer as he thinks about the Duff Brewery from the early hours of the morning and forgets his duties (he decides not to go to work). His posture is too liberal although he knows the serious consequences of alcoholism. Despite his liberal stance he clashes with Marge's moderate attitude towards alcohol. She is more conservative as she maintains that duties come before pastimes and then duties. At the factory, an employer informs visitors that some beer has been adulterated. In these cases, when a contaminated product becomes known, severe measures are taken. However, Homer neither knows about this news nor shows interest in this warning, he is very passive. After the visit, Homer drives a few miles after drinking beer. The police stop the couple and test Homer for alcohol with a breathalyzer, the results are positive and Homer is sent to prison. The conservative attitude of the police defeats Homer's violation of the drunk driving law. Although he has been to prison and lost his license, his liberal attitude towards alcohol has not changed. The conservative side (the police) tries to make him see the dangers of alcohol while driving. Homer is not yet aware of this situation. For example, when he is in driving school, he laughs at a documentary in which car accidents are described (“It's funny because I don't know them” - "The Simpsons" Duffless 1993). Also, Homer is forced to go to Alcoholics Anonymous. This organization is considered non-profit and apolitical and seeks to help people who have alcohol-related problems.
