Little did I know. On a January day 2 years ago my mother came home with a ton of information about this summer camp in the Pocono Mountains. My mom and I both took a look at some information and talked about what a great opportunity this could be for me. Although I admit I was a little scared, not because I was afraid of being away from home for 21 days, but because it was something new, with a different culture and a different religion than the one I grew up in. The days got closer for me the more excited but hesitant I was about leaving for this camp. Although buying new clothes and writing my name on everything was fun, I had no idea what going to camp would be like. Every day I wondered: Will I be the only non-Jewish guy there? How are the children over there? Are they accepting? Thoughtful? What will we do at camp? The more we prepared for the day ahead, the faster the year passed, which meant the nearest camp was about to begin. I've never been away for 21 days in a state where I've never been with people I've never seen....
