After our discussion Rick formed a meeting to start organizing a lobby group. They created an agenda that included inviting social service agencies to the meeting to discuss their suggestions on how to develop an advocacy group. They have prepared a mission statement believing it will unite the group, as well as provide focus and draw attention to the pressure group. At this meeting the five outlined an outline for organizing the group to address the needs of people with disabilities and how the inequality and stigma they face create social barriers. They chose to focus on the challenges that Rick and the first six members were facing, namely the lack of funding from the government in terms of inadequate assistance with housing, personal finances and employment. At this meeting they decided to recruit members through the local newspaper, the recreation center and door-to-door canvassing. One member suggested using social media, and United Way offered to help by placing a thread on their webpage. The six members share their personal stories via a video on the website. The website would be full of current information about the effects on society when adequate resources are lacking in a city and would have a discussion forum and registration sheet. They decided to take advantage of the fact that elections were imminent in the next 12 months by preparing to put pressure on the elected representatives in their district. Rick and I decided that I would meet with committee members to discuss their concerns and how they are affected by the lack of available resources in their city. Some parents of children with disabilities suggested speaking to the local principal to develop an awareness of how the child with disabilities is affected by a lack of adequate funding, accommodations and resources. I decided we could find out if the people we meet with at business associate meetings know any personal acquaintances who may have a disability. It would also be a good idea to know the campaign strategies of government officials. The lobby group will seek information from government officials to see what they are interested in. The group will urge a leader to approach local government officials to discuss how they could benefit from their campaign by offering their support to disabled people. The advocacy group expresses optimism and is actively engaged in planning and organizing positive change in their community.
