Topic > Training and Development - 1788

The purpose of this chapter is to further broaden the understanding on the area of training and performance based on different perspectives from different authors. It would further explain the training that has been implemented in Tesco Corporation for their employees. Since Tesco is a British international food retail and general merchandising chain, providing training and development opportunities to employees is the way to increase performance in the workplace. 1.1 Training and Development Training and development is the process of learning to help employees develop their personal and organizational skills. skills, knowledge and skills in order to increase employee performance. The focus of all aspects of human resource development is on developing a superior workforce so that the organization and individual employees can achieve their goals in customer service (Adiele Ndunuju, 2009). The Tesco company offers both on-the-job training and off-the-job training to employees to increase employee performance. On-the-job training methods included by Tesco Corporation are shadowing, coaching, mentoring and job rotation or secondment. On-the-job training (OJT) is one of the methods of training the employee on the job while doing the actual work during the training session. A professional trainer or experienced employee will serve as the course instructor and use learning principles often supported by formal classroom training (BusinessDictionary, 2010). On-the-job training (OJT) is training that is implemented in organizations because it is planned, organized and conducted at the employee's workplace. It is usually impossible to teach someone... halfway...... the setup of the company, thus increasing the chances of his efficiency in carrying out his tasks (Ndunuju Adiele, 2011).3.3 Important to the future researcherThe training and development are very important for researchers in seeking information. In recent years, researchers have embraced new technologies and services that allow them to discover, locate, access, and create information resources on their desktops. However, there is evidence to suggest that research information skills have not kept pace with rapid changes in this area. This raises important questions about how researchers acquire the appropriate skills in managing information and using the training and development opportunities provided, therefore training and development can help the researcher develop their skills in conducting research (Sarah, 2009).
