Since 1980, approximately 500 Aboriginal women have disappeared and many have been murdered, but they are rarely reported in the media (Gilchrist, 2010). As previously mentioned, the media views Aboriginal women as inferior to other races (Gilchrist, 2010). This may be why, although significantly less common, reports of missing White women tend to be over-reported (Gilchrist, 2010). Furthermore, when a white woman goes missing, the media portrays them as innocent victims to elicit a stronger response from viewers than Aboriginal women, when they are depicted as invisible or often problematic (Gilchrist, 2010). The problem here is should we blame the media for not representing these missing cases? The media is like any other business and as such it is perfectly normal for them to target news that will appeal to us as viewers. This shows that there is still persistent racial and systematic discrimination against Aboriginal people dating back to European times. colonization
