Is adolescence really a matter of fitting in or not standing out? Do you have any responsibility towards students who don't fit in? Did you hear it? Shut up and listen carefully. Do you feel it now? The cries for help from the kids who don't fit in with the crowd. The screams are not always loud. Sometimes they make no sound at all. Stop and listen to them. Take responsibility for those kids and stand up for those kids who don't stand up for themselves. In the book Lord of the Flies, there were many unanswered cries for help. Piggy, the character in the story with glasses, who was out of shape and suffered from asthma, felt hatred for things he could not avoid. Piggy was chosen not because he was a different color or couldn't speak well, but because he was out of shape. Piggy couldn't hunt because of his asthma, but he was still discriminated against. Jack said Piggy couldn't eat because he didn't go hunting. “'You have not hunted'” (Golding, 104). Jack had intended not to give Piggy the food, but why? Even though he didn't hunt, Simon didn't and neither did Ralph. So why shouldn't Piggy be fed if Ralph and Simon did it? The answer is that it was chosen. He's the weird one in the group because he's fat. Jack hated him because he wasn't physically able to help much because he had asthma and was fat. Luckily Simon took responsibility and gave Piggy some of his meat. Simon didn't have to do this, but it's the groups' responsibility to look after each other. Calls for help usually go unanswered, leaving the victim thinking, "Why is this happening to me?" or “What did I do to deserve this?” Most of the time they haven't done anything, but they are still in a hurricane of thoughts trying to figure out why they are being targeted. Some were…middle of the paper…when that is the path he chose to take. When you go out at night and look at the stars, which one catches your attention first? The one that stands out or the biggest and brightest. But why do we worship the one strange star and at the same time discriminate against the one person who stands out? Why do we want to stay hidden in our shell like turtles if people are attracted to what stands out? When we are children we are constantly told, “You can be whatever you want when you grow up” or “You can do anything if you put your heart into it.” We are encouraged to stand out. Unfortunately, when we reach a certain age in life, we are told things like, "You will be nothing in life" or "You are nothing." This makes us stay in that shell and never want to come out because of the fear rooted in us that if we stand out, disappointment, fear or sadness will surely follow..
