Being married can be the best moment of some people's lives and can be a very unpleasant experience for others. For most people, being married means one of two things: either being stuck with one person for the rest of your life, or being able to be with only one person for the rest of your life. In the poem “Wedlock” by Benjamin Franklin he expresses the idea of taking pleasure while being married, of making the best of your wife and not stabbing her in the back because most men only get one wife in life. Furthermore, one must be absolutely sure before making such an important decision in life as marriage because, once made, the results can be very rewarding or very consequential. The last idea that Franklin leaves us with from the poem is that a situation can be greatly improved simply by looking at it with a better perspective. Franklin uses a very interesting title in “Wedlock” which, in a way, sums up the poem very well. . Wedlock is obviously a combination of the two words marriage and lock and he chooses them because Franklin wants to create the image that marriage is similar to a prison, in which the man is locked up by his women and cannot do what he wants. The first sentence begins with “Wedlock, as the elders note” (line 1), this indicates that this poem was written with a lot of experience regarding marriage. Whether or not an aging man has regrets about marriage, he is much the wiser for it. Of course not all men regret their marriage and the true beauty of this poem is that there are two perspectives, two paths, within the same poem. These two paths are the two potential outcomes of marriage, one happy and one unhappy. Of course there are many in between, but marriages tend to lean towards one... middle of the card... it's the marriage, he's had plenty of time to regret it. Saying: "Some from experience find these words out of place, married at will, they quickly repent." (lines 7-8) Franklin is saying that people who waited, more experienced people who stay together for a while before getting married, are quick to regret marriage because things were better and simpler the way they were before marriage . Franklin offers many interesting ideas in the poem “Wedlock,” such as being absolutely sure before making decisions about life, and always trying to look at every situation with the best possible perspective. The most important message that Franklin portrays in the poem "Wedlock" is to enjoy your spouse because most people only get one chance, so Franklin wants them to make the best of it.
