Topic > The Importance of Interfaith Marriage - 701

According to Markman et al., (2010) couples need these three things, “the ability to maintain respect in light of differences, sufficient personal security regarding one's core beliefs so as not to be overly threatened by the absence of an agreement and a strong and clear commitment to being together and sharing life, even when they do not share all the things that matter in life” (p. 308). I also believe that having clear communication with each other on a regular basis is important when you have different beliefs. You don't want anything said or done to be misunderstood or for feelings to be hurt in any way. Being in a marriage with a different religious background can prove to be a challenge for some couples, while for others they find a way to make the marriage work despite the differences. If couples could incorporate the core values of commitment, honesty, and respect, having an interfaith marriage might not seem so daunting. Communication is a vital tool to have in any relationship, and as long as couples continue to talk about what's important to them, from religion to sex, they can have a happy and healthy life.
